V. J. Harvey's TOP TWENTY-TWO COMEDY CHOICES

Bringing Up Baby (1938)
I was given the assignment of selecting twenty of my favorite classic comedies (released prior to 1972) from A.F.I.'s 100 Years 100 Laughs nominees. I chose my twenty. There were many more that I didn't include that I really love, but I wouldn't put on a list of comedies, such as Roman Holiday and Funny Girl. I have always considered them to be dramas, although they have comical moments. I guess I think this, because they don't have very happy endings, which is part of my definition of a comedy. Also, I added two movies that I remember as being very funny that weren't on AFI's list: You Gotta Stay Happy and Father Goose.

  • Adam's Rib (1949)
  • Bringing Up Baby (1938)
  • Cactus Flower (1969)
  • Charade (1963)
  • The Court Jester (1956)
  • The Gay Divorcee (1934)
  • Father Goose (1964)
  • Harvey (1950)
  • His Girl Friday (1940)
  • It Happened One Night (1934)
  • Holiday (1938)
  • Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)
  • My Fair Lady (1964)
  • My Man Godfrey (1936)
  • The Philadelphia Story (1940)
  • The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
  • Singin' in the Rain (1952)
  • The Talk of the Town (1942)
  • The Thin Man (1934)
  • Topper (1937)
  • The Women (1939)
  • You Gotta Stay Happy (1948)
