Don't Know...DIMITRI TIOMKIN?
You really should know who DIMITRI TIOMKIN (1894-1979) is! One of the great Hollywood composers, Dimitri Tiomkin had a successful career as a pianist before moving to America in 1925, becoming a citizen in 1937. He worked with Frank Capra, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, John Wayne and others, leaving behind a body of work still familiar to lovers of film music. He had 23 Oscar nominations and 4 wins.
A fine place to start is by viewing: The Alamo (1960). The haunting "Green Leaves of Summer" was perfect for this epic film. Tiomkin's music is one of the high points of his career.
Watch this and then see these other four films.
High Noon (1952) Tiomkin's theme song helped save this movie on its initial release. The scoring helps create the feeling of suspense as Gary Cooper must face the outlaws alone. Tiomkin won two Oscars for this film.
Land of the Pharaohs (1955) Tiomkin's magnificent score is the best thing about Howard Hawks' gargantuan flop. It makes the movie watchable.
The High and the Mighty (1954) People who have never seen the film know the theme, one of the most recognizable in film history.
Giant (1956) On my trip to Texas I played the theme as we crossed the border. This music captures all the grandeur of George Stevens' sprawling epic of the modern West. This was the first film music I bought.
