Knighted in 1959 by Queen Elizabeth II. "de Cuffe" was his mother's surname; he never knew the identity of his father.

His Ealing comedies were "Kind Hearts and Coronets", "The Card", "The Lavender Hill Mob", "The Man in the White Suit", "Barnacle Bill", and "The Captain's Paradise". "The Prisoner" is a very serious film indeed, and "The Horse's Mouth" is a character study.
